OTP Spotlight: Spike and Buffy

Tuesday, 30 June 2015

Show: Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Network: WB/UPN
Actors: James Marsters and Sarah Michelle Gellar

Sworn mortal enemies to lovers to closest allies. Spike and Buffy have been through so much together. He's a vampire, she's the slayer so naturally they start off against each other, trying to kill one another. Until Spike strikes a deal with Buffy at the end of Season 2 to help stop Angelus from destroying the world. When Spike gets his chip implanted in his head where he can't hurt humans, he begins to work on Buffy's side, and eventually falling in love with her.

Once Spike is in love, he'll do anything for them even though he's soulless, he still loves fiercely. When Buffy comes back from the dead in Season 6, the only person she feels she can really turn to is Spike. They begin an unhealthy sexual relationship that doesn't end well. Spike ends up doing the unforgivable, and tries to force himself on her. After that he's mortified with himself, and goes to fight for his soul back.

In Season 7, he returns to Sunnydale with his soul in tact, but he's out of his mind. Later, we find out that it's because he was being controlled by the First Evil. Buffy reluctantly begins to help him, and eventually they grow closer than they've ever been. They become each other's closest ally, the person they each trust the most. By the end of the series, Buffy tells Spike that she loves him as he sacrifices himself to save the world. (Don't worry, he comes back on Angel's spinoff show).

Why I love them:

I always preferred Buffy with Spike because I love the development they went through to get to where they ended up. These two were easily my favourite characters separately on the show, so seeing them together was always fun. They had insane amount of chemistry. I loved watching Spike's transformation from bad guy to hero all because he fell in love with the Slayer. I loved watching Buffy develop her level of trust and love for him. Season 7 was my favourite season for them. I was happy that they were able to gain back the trust they had to the point where they counted on each other over everyone.

My thoughts on Comic Book Spuffy:

Buffy ended in Season 7, and continued in the form of graphic novels for Season 8 and beyond, and is currently in the 10th season. I've yet to read them, but they are on my TBR list and you will see them featured on this blog when I do. From what I'm understanding in Season 10, Spike and Buffy are now a couple and are working on their relationship as well as fighting the forces of darkness together with the gang. This makes me very happy, and I can't wait to read it all for myself..hopefully soon!!

TV Talk; Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Monday, 29 June 2015

If you were to ask me what my favourite show of all-time was, I would say Buffy the Vampire Slayer. It's been my favourite show since I was in the 7th grade, and I don't see that changing anytime soon. Who doesn't love a girly girl who's also a total badass vampire slayer. The humour, the drama, the kickass fighting scenes, what's not to love!?

Let's talk about my favourite show of all-time, shall we!

Buffy Summers; Our heroine. Buffy will always be my ultimate favourite superhero. She's everything I'd want in a superhero and role model. She's girly, funny, caring, and happens to battle the forces of evil.

Willow Rosenburg; The group's witch. Willow starts off the show as this shy, meek character and as the series goes on she grows into this tough character who learns witchcraft and goes on to become the most powerful wicca around. She even was the series big bad in Season 6, which thankfully she comes back from.

Xander Harris; The funny man. Xander is seen as the comic relief of the show, more so in the beginning, but still has his moments throughout the show. He's known as the heart of the group. He's fiercely loyal to his friends, and is always trying to help in any way he can.

Rupert Giles; The Watcher. Every slayer needs a watcher. Someone who guides her and trains with her. Giles grows to become a father figure to the gang, but mostly to Buffy. He's always there to help her in anyway he can.

Angel; The vampire with a soul. Angel starts off the series as this mysterious character who is often warning Buffy about danger to come. Eventually he and Buffy grow close, and he becomes her first love. When they sleep together for the first time, he loses his soul and goes evil. Buffy and her friends restore his soul at the end of Season 2, and he remains her love for most of Season 3 until at the end of that season when he leaves for Los Angeles (and his own spinoff show which is self-entitled, Angel).

Spike; The bad boy..er, vampire. Spike comes in Season 2 with his love, Drusilla, as the villains of the season. It's revealed throughout the series that Spike is a descendant of Angel and his sire, Darla. Spike leaves at the end of Season 2, but comes back regularly in Season 4. When he comes back, he gets captured by The Initiative (military men who hunt demons), they put a chip in his head that prevents him from harming humans. Which gets him to slowly join the Scooby gang, and fall in love with Buffy.

Dawn Summers; The little sister. Dawn joined the cast in Season 5 as Buffy's little sister. Obviously she's not really her little sister as she wasn't in the first 4 seasons. In Season 5, the villain, Glory, was a God who was banished to our world and needed a Key to open the door for her to get back to her realm. Dawn was the Key that monks had made using Buffy's blood. She starts off quite bratty, but ends up maturing in the 7th season.

Anya Jenkins; The Ex-Demon. Anya starts off in Season 3 as a Vengeance Demon who seeks out wronged woman and extracts vengeance on men. She ends up losing her powers, and gets turned back into a human. She ends up falling for Xander while she learns how to be human again. Anya is very blunt and hilarious.

Tara Maclay; The Wicca Lover. Tara joined in Season 4 when the gang went to college. She met Willow in Wicca group, and they quickly became friends and eventually lovers. Willow and Tara were the first lesbian couple to share an on-screen kiss. Tara was always very caring and nurturing towards her friends and Dawn. Sadly, she got killed off at the end of Season 6.

There is so many other amazing characters that I haven't mentioned that make this show great. The drama, the humour, the fight sequences, this show has it all. I would recommend this show to anyone who would listen. I love it so much!!

Are you a Buffy fan? What do you love about the show?

My Version of Perfect Coffee Table Books

Sunday, 28 June 2015

The moment I saw both of these I thought two things, they are perfect for me and I need them ASAP! So I bought them almost immediately. For now they are books for my nightstand, but once I have my own place, these are the kind of books you'd find on my coffee table.

Since they are more coffee table books than actual fictional books, I thought I'd cram to book reviews in one. I'm still going to use the same format I use for all my other book reviews, so this is going to be a bit of a long post.

Alice in tumblr-Land by Tim Manley
Published by Penguin Books on November 5, 2013
Genre: Humour
Pages: 265
Book Copy: Hardcover
No. of times read: 1

The Ugly Duckling still feels gross compared to everyone else, but now she’s got Instagram, and there’s this one filter that makes her look awesome. Cinderella swaps her glass slippers for Crocs. The Tortoise and the Hare Facebook stalk each other. Goldilocks goes gluten free. And Peter Pan finally has to grow up and get a job, or at least start paying rent.

Here are more than one hundred fairy tales, illustrated and re-imagined for today. Instead of fairy godmothers, there’s Siri. And rather than big bad wolves, there are creepy dudes on OkCupid. In our brave new world of social networking, YouTube, and texting, fairy tales can once again lead us to "happily ever after" — and have us laughing all the way.
Rating: 5/5

My Review:

Two things I love Disney and social media! Combine those things and you have this book. It takes the stories you loved as kids and turns them into adult themed stories. Each character has their own story about modern issues, and throughout the book it gets added to. By the end you know where they are at in their "life".

Very cute, creative book! I enjoyed it!!

With delightful illustrations and an unabashed love for all the in(ternet)s and outs of geek culture, this book is packed with tips, playthroughs, and cheat codes for everything from starting an online fan community to planning a convention visit to supporting fellow female geeks in the wild.
Rating: 4/5

My Review:

This book speaks my language! If ever you want a book that gives you insight into what fangirls lives are like, this it is. From the different words we use, the right and wrong ways to handle different social media networks. How to write and review fanfiction, and the different fanfiction terms. How to handle going to conventions. All that, and more! This book has it all, and it's a cute little book to flip through and learn more about what you already know and love.

Open Road Summer by Emery Lord
Published by Walker Childrens on April 15, 2014
Genre: YA, Contemporary
Pages: 352
Book Copy: Paperback
No. of times read: 1

After breaking up with her bad-news boyfriend, Reagan O’Neill is ready to leave her rebellious ways behind. . . and her best friend, country superstar Lilah Montgomery, is nursing a broken heart of her own.

Fortunately, Lilah’s 24-city tour is about to kick off, offering a perfect opportunity for a girls-only summer of break-up ballads and healing hearts. But when Matt Finch joins the tour as its opening act, his boy-next-door charm proves difficult for Reagan to resist, despite her vow to live a drama-free existence.

This summer, Reagan and Lilah will navigate the ups and downs of fame and friendship as they come to see that giving your heart to the right person is always a risk worth taking.

A fresh new voice in contemporary romance, Emery Lord’s gorgeous writing hits all the right notes.
Rating: 4.5/5

My Review:

If you're looking for a light summer read, this is it! It's a story about a bad girl who's trying to reform and change her ways while joining her superstar best friend while she goes on tour. Her best friend, Dee (or as her fans know her, Liliah), is very Taylor Swift: the early years, and I loved that. I'm a huge Taylor Swift fan and have been since the start, so I instantly loved Dee and their similarities.

I liked Reagan for the most part, but found her to be a little too irrational at times. Which is understandable because of what she's been through, it just got a bit much for me. But overall, she was a good main character to follow as she learned to love and trust again. Matt joined my list of fictional boys that I fell in love with. It's no wonder Reagan lets her guard down with him. He's sweet, funny, and genuinely a nice guy who just happens to be a superstar.

This book is fun, sweet and a good read about leaving your old self behind for a better life, as well as giving you insight on what the life of having a best friend as a superstar is like. I really enjoyed this book, and thought it was the perfect book to read for the summer.

OTP Spotlight: Cory and Topanga

Thursday, 25 June 2015

Show: Boy Meets World
Network: ABC
Actors: Ben Savage and Danielle Fishel

The story goes that they've been dating since they were 2 years old. Then when Cory was 10 or 11, Eric convinced him girls were yucky and they had the lost years (Season 1&2) were they weren't together but were still friends. At the start of Season 3, Cory asked Topanga to be his girlfriend and from then on they were the forever couple. They did have their on again/off again moments throughout the show, but always ended up back together. Topanga proposed to Cory at their high school graduation. They got married towards the start of the 7th, and final, season. Now, thanks to Girl Meets World, we know they are still happily married with two kids, Riley and Auggie, living in New York.

Why I love them:

They were that couple that was so fairytale in a modern show. The kind you wished you could have someday, but no couple is like them. They were each other's first everything. Who doesn't love Cory and Topanga together. Definition of a perfect TV couple!

My thoughts for them on Girl Meets World:

My childhood heart is in heaven that the show I loved is all grown up and has kids of their own. I love that Cory and Topanga have maintained their love for each other, and are proving to be the perfect parents along with still being the perfect couple. I hope to see more Cory and Topanga scenes on the show, as it is focused more on the kids, as it should be. But some more couple moments would be nice!

Did you watch Boy Meets World growing up? Did you love these two together?

TV Talk; Boy Meets World

Wednesday, 24 June 2015

Now that I've decided to write blog posts on all the shows I've watched or am currently watching, I need to write a post about this one. This is my favourite childhood show, and I recently just rewatched all 7 season before getting into Girl Meets World, but forgot to do a post about it. So here we are!

First off, finding good pictures of a 90's show isn't the easiest so keep that in mind. Okay Boy Meets World, let's talk about it.

Cory Matthews; The boy the show follows. Cory was always my favourite growing up. He's funny, loyal to his friends, and always tries to do the right thing. His relationships with both Shawn and Topanga are my favourite.

Shawn Hunter; Cory's best friend, and the bad boy of the show. Shawn didn't have the best childhood growing up in a trailer park. His mom ran out on him and his dad. His dad was always in and out of his life, never really there for him. It's his friendship with Cory that's kept him grounded and it was always fun to see these two guys truly be there for each other always.

Topanga Lawrence; Cory's girlfriend. She's smart, has good morals, and stands up for what she believes in. Her relationship with Cory was one that everyone wanted. They've been together since they were two years old. They have that forever relationship. (More on them in tomorrow's post). Topanga was the perfect role model to have growing up.

Eric Matthews; Cory's older brother. Eric started off the show as the handsome, ladies man, older brother. As the show went on, Eric became the goofy comic relief with a heart of gold. Eric is such a great character! He's funny, dim-witted, but loves his family and his friends so much, he would do anything for them. I love his relationship with Mr. Feeny. Who doesn't love the Feeny call!!

Mr. Feeny; Everyone's favourite teacher. George Feeny was Cory's teacher and next door neighbour. Even though it doesn't make sense, he taught them from grade 6 all the way to college. He was always there to provide life lessons for anyone on the show.

Angela Moore; Shawn's girlfriend. Angela joined the show in the 5th season as a love interest for Shawn. She's another really great character in that she was strong and stuck to what she believed in. Her and Shawn had a very on again and off again relationship, but there's no denying they were each other's first loves.

Jack Hunter; Shawn's half older brother. Another character who joined in the 5th season, it was revealed that Shawn's father, Chet, fathered another son. Shawn and Jack had a very shaky relationship throughout the series, but eventually accepted that they were brothers and formed a brotherly bond. Jack also became roommates and best friends with Eric. Their friendship was always so great. They were a comedy duo together.

I loved watching Boy Meets World growing up! It was always a fun show that taught you alot of great life lessons. It had heart, and I love that. I always didn't mention all the great supporting characters because we'd be here for a while. But this was a great show to watch growing up, and I'm so happy that came back with Girl Meets World. If you want to see my post on that show, go here.

OTP Spotlight: Stiles and Lydia

Tuesday, 23 June 2015

Show: Teen Wolf
Network: MTV
Actors: Dylan O'Brien and Holland Roden

Stiles has always been in love with Lydia ever since the third grade. She was the popular girl who didn't give him the time of day. It's only when Stiles' best friend starts to date the new girl and also Lydia's new best friend, Allison, that they start to get closer. Throughout the years, you see Lydia start to turn to Stiles more and more, especially when she learns about the supernatural world she's living in. She's the smartest girl in school, and he's got a detective's mind so the two of them often use their smarts to help figure out what's going on for the pack. While they haven't ever dated, (they have kissed once, her way of stopping him from having a panic attack), they have become very close. When Scott, Stiles and Allison needed to go through a ritual to help save their parents, Deaton (one of Scott's mentors) said that they need to be paired with someone who they had a strong connection with, "a kind of emotional tether", Stiles was partnered with Lydia.

Why I love them:

I always say Stiles and Lydia are the Seth and Summer (The OC) in Supernatural world. She's popular, he's not. He's loved her since third grade, she gets to know him and forms a strong bond with him. I always loved Stiles' unwavering love and devotion to her, and while we don't see it as much lately now that he's with Malia, it's still there anytime they share a scene together. I also love seeing Lydia's growing feelings towards him. While it's never really been put into words by her if she has romantic feelings for him, it's all in her actions. It's very clear that she cares very much for him. They are a slow burn couple (a little too slow in my opinion), and anytime they are on-screen together, it's electric.

My hopes for Season 5:

I would love for these two to finally get together! We're in Season 5, we've waited long enough! I would love to see Lydia to acknowledge that she has romantic feelings for Stiles. I'm sorry to say that I am hoping for a Stalia (Stile and Malia) breakup, and from what I heard there's a very good possibility that that's happening. But I'm not hoping it's because Malia cheats, I'd actually rather it be because of Lydia. Not that he cheats on her with Lydia, I don't want any cheating involved for once on a TV show, please! But I want it to be clear that for Stiles, it'll always be Lydia. So fingers crossed!!

(Taken from the Season 5 trailer)

I'll leave you now with a video MTV posted on their YouTube page as a tribute to Stiles and Lydia.

Do you watch Teen Wolf? Are you a Stydia fan?

TV Talk; Teen Wolf

Monday, 22 June 2015

One week from today until Teen Wolf is back for a 5th Season! Because of this, I thought it was time to do a Talking TV post on this show. While I didn't really love last season, I am looking forward to this upcoming season. I plan to try and post a episode discussion every Tuesday, but I'm not making any promises. We'll just have to wait and see how the season goes.

But hopefully, there's going to be a lot of Teen Wolf on the blog this summer. So let's get started!

Scott McCall; The Teen Wolf himself. The show starts with Scott's best friend, Stiles, dragging him out into the woods to see a dead body. While out there, Scott gets bit by a werewolf and thus begins the show about a Teen Wolf. Scott's went from scared teenager to leader of his own pack. It's been amazing to see him transform into the character he is.

Stiles Stilinski; Stiles was an instant favourite of mine. He's Scott's best friend, and the Sheriff's son. Stiles is the detective of the group, often figuring out what's going on before anyone else does. He's the comic relief of the show as well, but has had his dramatic moments as well along with being possessed by an evil spirit in 3B. Basically Dylan O'Brien can handle any scene because he's perfect! Yes, he's my celebrity crush!! Because of this, I'm most excited to see what Stiles gets up to this upcoming year.

Lydia Martin; My favourite lady! At the start of the show, Lydia's the pretty, popular girl that Stiles' is in love with, but she doesn't give him the time of day. She's also the smartest character on the show. Luckily at the end of Season 2, she found out about the supernatural world she lives in. Now she helps Stiles figure out what's going on in Beacon Hills. She also found out in Season 3 that she's a Banshee. So she's come a long way since the Season 1, and I'm looking forward to where they are going with her character. I can't wait to see them explore her Banshee powers further!

Allison Argent; Our Fallen Angel. Allison is Scott's first love which was hard at the start because her family are werewolf hunters. Allison eventually becomes a hunter herself. She's also best friends with Lydia. At the end of Season 3B, Lydia gets taken by the Nogitsune (which is a long story), but everyone rallies to find her, including Allison. She sadly died while trying to rescue Lydia, something that still upsets me to this day.

Derek Hale; Derek is the broody character of the show who acts as a mentor to Scott. His whole family is werewolves, and sadly most of them all died in a fire set by Allison's Aunt Kate. There's not much to be said about his character. His just always their to help Scott when he needs it. Unfortunately Derek won't be in Season 5, or if he is, it will be for a very limited time.

Kira Yukimura; Kira joined the show in the second half of Season 3. While she does become a love interest for Scott, we also find out that she's a kitsune aka a fox. She's very quirky and sweet. I think she's been a great new addition to the show. Her relationship with Scott is very sweet, and I can't wait to see her character develop more in the upcoming season.

Malia Tate (Hale); Malia also joined the show in the second half of Season 3. Malia is a werecoyote on the show. When Malia was 9, she transformed into a coyote and accidentally killed her mother and sister. Because of that traumatic event, she stayed a coyote until Scott used his Alpha powers to snap her out of it. Since she was a coyote for roughly 8 years of her life, she comes across as very blunt, and socially awkward as she doesn't know how to function like a normal teenager. While I'm not a fan of her romantic relationship with Stiles (Team Stydia for me), I do like her as a character. It's revealed that she's actually adopted, and her biological father is Derek's psychotic uncle, Peter. He told her that her mother is someone known as The Desert Wolf, so this upcoming season will be about Malia finding out more about her, and I can't wait for that and how that plays out.

This show has such a great group of characters, and I love that this show started with just Scott and Stiles with Derek as a mentor to Scott now being the Alpha Wolf with his pack of friends who are all have their own set of skills. This upcoming season has been looking so good, and I've been counting down the days!!

Here's a trailer to get you excited for Season 5.

Do you watch Teen Wolf? Are you excited for Season 5 of Teen Wolf?
PS. Notice my new signature?? I love it so much! It was made by my friend, Katie, who has an amazing blog that you should definitely go check out!
